Sandra, Teacher, Scotland

Condition: Knee Pain, Torn Cartilage, Arthritic Knees

Treated at:  How Clinic, Edinburgh

Device Used: MP200 MasterPuls

What is / was your condition?

I have suffered with my knee for many years, I am a deputy head teacher and spend a lot of time on my feet, I think the combination of a very busy lifestyle and poor footwear, especially in the summer months, has contributed to the problem with my knees and more recently my Achilles.

How long have you had / did you have symptoms?

I have had knee pain for over 10 years, I have had 3 knee operations to repair torn Cartilage, two of them key hole surgery.

How did it impact your life / sport / physical activity?

I was in constant chronic pain with my knee, it impacted on my quality of life, I found stairs very difficult. It got to the point of stopping me enjoying my holidays abroad, I wasn't even able to climb the stairs in a very beautiful villa we had hired, unable to sleep in the lovely bedroom. My knee pain also impacted my quality of sleep.

How did you hear about Shockwave Therapy.

I was researching online and I found Helen How's clinic, it was her website that mentioned Shockwave. I asked my Doctor about Shockwave and he had heard positive things about it from a friend of his who was a physio, so advised me to give it a try.

What other treatments did you try prior to Shockwave Therapy?

Apart from the operations for my knee I had also tried numerous physio therapy sessions and frequent visits to my GP and private hospitals, including X-rays and CT scans, where a diagnosis of torn cartilage was given, I was instructed to take analgesics to manage the pain.

How was it during the Shockwave Therapy treatment?

I didn't feel discomfort during the shockwave therapy treatment. Helen started on a lower setting until I was used to the treatment, then gradually increased it. During my sessions with Helen I suffered a nasty fall at Christmas injuring my other knee, Helen started to treat both knees and my Achilles.

How was it immediately after the Shockwave Therapy Treatment?

I felt immediate pain relief in my knee after the Shockwave therapy treatments.

How many sessions of Shockwave Therapy did you have?

I had approx 12 sessions of Shockwave on my knee with the torn cartilage, I have also had several sessions on my other knee and my achillies. I have been having shockwave therapy on my various injuries for approx 1 year - 1 or twice per month.

How long since your last session of Shockwave Therapy?

My last treatment was a week ago but that was for my Achilles.

How is the condition now and how has it improved your life / sport / physical activity?

My knee has definitely improved, I am no longer in chronic pain and I don't need as many pain killers. I can walk much better now. Helen was very realistic with me, she explained this wouldn't be an overnight cure and it would take some time. Helen was very positive and enthusiastic about shockwave, this made me feel confident and hopeful. She is also very ethical and reasonably priced. I will continue my treatments with her for my achillies and arthritis.

Would you recommend Shockwave Therapy to others with this condition or similar conditions?

I would absolutely recommend Shockwave therapy to anyone suffering with knee problems, achilles pain and arthritis.
