Everything You Possibly Need to Know About Wrinkles

Facial skin communicates to the world around you where you are in terms of your health and age. It’s a no brainer that we all want younger looking skin with a youthful glow.

As we age, there is an increased breakdown of collagen and elastin over time – the proteins responsible for the skin’s strength and ability to snap back in place. Due to genetics and poor lifestyles choices these fine lines, wrinkles and folds become more pronounced, which varies from each individual.

Wrinkles are unfortunately an unavoidable process of ageing and contrary to popular belief, a surgical facelift and/or botox is not the only solution to smoothening out your wrinkles:


Some of the best treatment for wrinkles are actually non-invasive and do not require going under the knife. Read on to discover a course of treatment that will work for you:

1.       Carbon Hollywood spectra laser peels

The spectra peel is a no-downtime procedure that drastically helps restore the appearance of aged or damaged skin. This procedure is very safe on most skin types and is a gentle way of achieving even skin tone, reduced pigmentation, fine lines and acne scars.

Many people do not experience pain during this treatment, only a slight warming of the skin and a light prickling feeling. Generally – no topical cream is required to soothe the skin.

2.       Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is another non-invasive procedure that consists of using non-allergenic crystals to remove your skin’s outermost layers of dead skin cells. Although a proven treatment method, they’re mainly effective on superficial wrinkles.

The procedure increases collagen production – which by your mid-twenties naturally starts to deplete. This in turn can slow the development of fine/more pronounced lines on the face. There’s also the added benefit of advancing the effects of topical antiwrinkle treatments, allowing them to penetrate the skin easily.

3.       Moisturisers

With the vast array of anti-aging products out there it can be quite daunting choosing a treatment that best suits your skin.

Lifestyle habits like smoking, alcohol consumption and sun damage caused by tanning/UV rays can all cause wrinkles to develop prematurely. The University of Maryland Medical Center has stated that moisturisers can aid in the hydration of skin by helping to prevent tears and bruises in the skin, but does not prevent the onset of wrinkles themselves.

The university noted that too much UV exposure can cause depletion of antioxidants within the skin, allowing free radicals to damage cells which in turn would make the skin more vulnerable to sun damage/wrinkles. 3.a.       Retinoids...

Retinoids have really come into light, with brands highlighting it as their key ingredient as a selling point. Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A – an ingredient commonly used in skincare. They’re known for reducing the appearance of lines, pigmentation and wrinkles after just 12 weeks of regular use.

It’s recommended to incorporate retinoids into your skincare routine at night, as they make your skin more prone to sun damage. A slight burning or stinging can be felt when you first start using retinoids as they act an as exfoliant. For a stronger, much quicker result, consider upgrading to a prescription-only Tretinoin, which a dermatologist can advise you on.

4.       Ultrasound therapy

Commercially known as HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) or Ultraformer – this form of treatment improves the appearance of wrinkles by emitting ultrasounds that penetrate below the skins surface to increase collagen production. This sophisticated skin technology can bypass the surface of the skin and targets the skin tissues where collagen sits. It is also known as a “micro facelift”.

The procedure is painless, however some mild, temporary redness and swelling has been reported (which goes down very quickly).

5.       Microneedling

Microneedling has been quite the health craze – it involves a fine-needle roller being rolled across the skin and creates tiny holes within (making it a semi-invasive treatment). A serum or cream is then applied, which aids the natural skin-healing process which is also a collagen producer in itself.

Redness and soreness can be observed from some patients but this goes down very fast. A practitioner will generally determine how many courses you need however the average person needs between four to six treatments in order to obtain the best results.

6.       IPL

Intense-Pulsed Light or ‘Photorejuvination’ involves producing a bright beam of light which is gently absorbed by the skins deepest layers, where new collagen can be produced. The new collagen fibres cause lines and imperfections to reduce drastically. It’s suitable for most skin types and a regular maintenance course of three to four months is generally recommended.

The treatment itself is virtually painless due to a contact cooling crystal, however those with sensitive skin can use a numbing cream before the procedure.
